Norwegian postal codes, known as 'postnummer', consist of four digits and were introduced in 1968 by the Norwegian postal service (Posten Norge) to streamline mail sorting and delivery across the country. Each code is closely tied to a specific delivery post office or a defined geographic area, and in many cases also to a particular place name that is officially associated with that code.
The four-digit system generally reflects a geographic progression, with codes increasing from the Oslo region outward toward the rest of the country. Larger cities and institutions may hold dedicated codes for high-volume mail, while smaller rural postal codes can cover large sparsely populated areas. Since 2020, postal codes are commonly referenced alongside Norway's reorganized counties (fylker), though the codes themselves remained unchanged through that administrative reform.
The database currently contains a total of 3,276 postal codes for Norway.
