Brazilian postal codes, known locally as Código de Endereçamento Postal (CEP), consist of eight digits formatted as 00000-000. The system is administered by Correios, the Brazilian national postal service, and was introduced in 1972 to streamline mail sorting and delivery across the country's vast territory.
The first digit of a Brazilian CEP identifies one of ten broad regional zones, while subsequent digits progressively narrow the location down to state, city, district, and in many cases individual streets or large buildings. Major urban centers such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have especially granular codes, with large businesses, government agencies, and apartment complexes sometimes assigned their own unique CEP.
The database currently contains a total of 17,892 postal codes for Brazil.
