Belgian postal codes consist of four digits, ranging from 1000 to 9999, with no letters or spaces. The system was introduced in 1969 and is administered by bpost, the national postal operator, in cooperation with the Belgian Institute for Postal and Telecommunications Services.
The numbering broadly reflects geography: codes starting with 1 cover Brussels and parts of Walloon Brabant, 2 denotes Antwerp province, 3 covers Flemish Brabant and Limburg, 4 corresponds to Liège province, 5 to Namur province, 6 to Hainaut and Luxembourg provinces, 7 to Hainaut, 8 to West Flanders, and 9 to East Flanders. Brussels city center uses the distinctive code 1000, while surrounding municipalities each have their own unique four-digit code.
The database currently contains a total of 1,146 postal codes for Belgium.
