Italy Postal Codes

The Italian postal code system, known as Codice di Avviamento Postale (CAP), was introduced in 1967 to streamline mail delivery across the country. CAP codes consist of five digits and are used to identify specific geographic areas, municipalities, or even individual addresses in larger cities. The first two digits generally indicate the province or larger regional area, while the remaining three specify smaller towns, districts, or zones within cities. For example, Rome has several CAPs starting with 001, while Milan’s begin with 201. In rural or less populated areas, a single CAP may cover multiple towns or villages. The system is maintained by Poste Italiane. There are currently 4684 postal/zip codes in Italy.
